The Beast of Gévaudan was a legendary Man-eating Creature that TERRORIZED south-central France (the former Gévaudan province) between 1764 and 1767, killing nearly 130 people, mostly women and children, with attacks attributed to a large, wolf-like beast with UNUSUAL FEATURES like a DARK STRIPE, LONG TAIL, and immense power.

 While often seen as an oversized wolf, its monstrous descriptions and ability to attack in daylight led to theories of a wolf-dog hybrid, an escaped lion, or even a supernatural entity, but it's believed to have been one or more exceptionally large, aggressive wolves, with hunts involving royal intervention finally ending the terror after a local hunter, Jean Chastel, killed a large wolf in 1767.
